Question by pat6290: What does “after hours trading” mean on the stock market?
I noticed that after the markets close there is after market trading. Is this people in other time zones who still have access to it until 4pm their time?

Nope, after the markets close they allow trading to continue on some securities online for another half hour.

Long ago, I made the mistake of placing a market order for a stock at 4pm, thinking the stock will open the next day at or near the same price. Although the stock traded on the New York Stock Exchange, this broker used a NASDAQ electronic exchange and bought share for me at 3 AM for about $2 over the closing and opening price. I am sure they sold them out of their own inventory at a time when no one else had a sell bid in so they could “stick it” to me and make a great profit for themselves.
So “after hours” can be way later than 1/2 hour after closing.
there are little internet based exchanges (I know of one in Kansas City, Mo) that can trade 24/7.

pre-market 8:30 to 9:20

9:30 to 4:00 regular market

4:30 to 8 is after hour. your broker will have a seperate process to fill these orders.

After hours trading has nothing to do with time zones. It is all based on eastern standard–New York time.

Pre-market trading and after hours trading are conducted on NASDAQ and NYSE stocks, which are called Extended hours Trading. Note that the fees for trading in extended hours is about 50% higher thannormal trade fees.

Also, you cannot do market orders in extended hours trading. You must set a limit price for your trades. Be careful trading extended hours. Many times the price during normal hours will be much different than in extended hours.
